May be this is the boring thing to do, however you should make a decent habit of backing-up every time you make an attempt to change your template.'Export Blog' also does the same job in broadly way. With the 'Export Blog' you can completely backup your blog including blog posts and comments. But template backup is the best thing to do than export your blog because export blog may come handy in circumstances when you accidentally delete your blog or some blog post.

If you run into any kind of problems with your template edits, you can simply revert your template back to its previous condition by restoring it from your backup.

Alright then. Let's go for it. This article is divided into two sections; how to backup your template and how to restore your it again.
Backup your Blogger Template
  1. Go to your 'Blogger' dashboard.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow adjacent to 'Go to post list' icon (if you have multiple blog, select the one for you want to backup) and select 'Template'.
  3. Click Backup/Restore at the right-top corner of the page.
  4. Click 'Download full template' in the pop-up menu that appears.

  5. That's it. Save the .xml file in your computer.

Restore your Blogger Template
  1. Go to your 'Blogger' dashboard.
  2. Click the drop-down arrow adjacent to 'Go to post list' icon (if you have multiple blog, select the one for you want to backup) and select 'Template'.
  3. Click Backup/Restore at the right-top corner of the page.
  4. Click 'Choose File'.

  5. Select the .xml file that you've downloaded earlier during backup.
  6. Click 'Upload'.
  7. You're done. Your template will appear in you blog once after uploading process is complete.
